Susan Stein Fashion Maven El Paseo Fashion Week 2015

With the Coachella Valley season in full swing and Spring just around the corner, many valley residents and visitors are anxiously awaiting one of the premier fashion events of the season. Carol Trentacosta sat down with close friend and fashion maven Susan Stein to get a sneak peek into what we might see coming down the runway at the 10th Annual El Paseo Fashion Week. Stein, the long-time fashion editor for Palm Springs Life has been the creative director of El Paseo Fashion Week since its inception as well as running her own fashion consultancy business which fuses Susan’s two passions: embracing fashion as a form of creative expressiona and educating people to be informed consumers.

So what is new for Fashion in 2015?

There is always so much that’s new every season and we have to weed through the newest trends to find out what suits us. The best way to look at this is to decide what looks best on you and go with what makes you smile when you look in the mirror.
For spring 2015 we will see lots of beautiful pastels and floral prints on dresses and on blouses. They prints can be an accent on a scarf or a part of an outfit. Head-to-toe floral would be difficult but could work if you were subtle and broke it up with a soft pastel cardigan or simple belt. Dresses are still popular for spring 2015 as well as the looser, flowy trouser often with wide legs and created from softer fabrics. Think color and have some fun. So, as you can see we’re heading toward a softer more feminine look.

Is there a must-have accessory this season?

I’m afraid it’s a return to the 70’s with platform shoes and thicker heels. Some may even be worn with socks! We also will see hanging and interesting earrings, cross body bags as well as handbags with handles that you actually carry. Crystal jewelry and flat shoes called skimmers.

What Color is in/out?

Gray will be very popular this winter (all 50 shades of it) and I would say that almost every color works if it suits you. If yellow tends to make you look like you match what you’re wearing, stay away from it and go to something that compliments your hair and skin tones. Remember, that it should make you smile when you look in the mirror. And look for beautiful and strong pastels in peaches, pinks and blues…remember I said “strong” When you see them you’ll know what I mean.

What about fabrics or patterns that are trending this season?

Paisleys, stripes, floral and large dots are all in. You may even see a return of Navaho and American Indian influence in patterns. This is a moving trend that will be even stronger in spring with a bit of a return to the 70’s look.

Is there anyone (new designer) that’s been discovered or debuted at Fashion Week?
I like to think that Michael Costello is one of our great finds. He started to show me his drawings about 9 years ago and when he debuted as part of project Runway’s entourage it was a real thrill for us. This year he has earned his own show on Wednesday, March 25 and will also be showing at NY Fashion Week in February. He is the American designer who is most often seen on celebrities and the red carpet these days.
We also presented a line called Houghton a few years ago and she has been selected in NY as one of the true up and coming designers. I’m proud that we found her as she began her career.

Do you see any new/continued trends with fashion and environmental consciousness?

Definitely. Consumers are so much more aware of the environment and also any trends that seem to support our responsibilities with nurturing it. I think the Vintage and re-purposing trend is a good example. Consumers are also purchasing more investment items that can sustain for a longer period of time.
The 3D printing of “fabrics” is another example of how we choose to save resources and be creative. Keep an eye out for that in the accessory world.

For visitors to our desert that only can make it to town for one of the wonderful Fashion Week El Paseo events, what is the one event that should not be missed?

I could never choose just one event because I am so proud of all of them. Each of our shows will be special with content and entertainment value in every aspect of them. The best advice is to go to our website, fashionweekelpaseo.com and find something that interests you. We cover all categories of fashion from couture to contemporary and you will be sure to find something that you’re curious to see.
Also, it’s our 10th Anniversary so we have created a very special show on Saturday, March 21st with 8 Couture designers from the last 9 years. That’s one everyone should see.

The Tenth Annual Fashion Week El Paseo unfolds March 21-28, 2015 under the Runway Tent on Larkspur Lane between El Paseo and Shadow Mountain in Palm Desert, California – the heart of Palm Desert’s most celebrated shopping district: El Paseo. Fashion Week El Paseo showcases the newest collections by top designers as well as fresh ideas by emerging designers. Produced by Palm Springs Life, it has become one of the Coachella Valley’s most popular events.
